FAQs

Can I host this game at my venue or event?
If you are hosting a non-public event for friends and family, you are welcome to use the Personal Edition available on the Meta Quest Store and Steam, but you may not currently use this version for commercial use.

We are working on a way to handle commercial licensing in future updates to the game. Contact info@toastidwaffel.com for commercial use inquiries prior to said update.
What accessories do you recommend?
Headstrap
We recommend upgrading the head strap for guest comfort, sanitation, and convenience.

We like the KiwiDesign Comfort Strap. It's cheap, easy-to-use, and comfortable. They also make a battery strap that will extend the battery another ~50%.

If you're expecting non-stop all-day traffic, you might try the BoboVR Hot-Swappable Battery Strap, though we have not tried this one.

Facial Interface
We strongly advise upgrading the facial interface to make it more comfortable and easy to wipe clean.

There are many suitable options, but we like the KiwiDesign Facial Interface, for its comfort and ventilation (to address fogging).
Can I play this outside?
We don't recommend it. If you do, take precautions:
  • If the sun shines through the lenses onto the screen, it will burn marks into the screen. Keep lenses covered when the headset is not on your head.
  • While in the game, you're blindfolded from the real world. Make sure to have someone (who is not in the game) keeping an eye out for any potential hazards.

Common Issues

The Game Became Unaligned
You can press the in-game menu button and select Re-Calibrate. You will be prompted to touch the 2 calibration points again.
If it continues to happen, it may be due to one of the following reasons:
The Screen May Have Turned Off.
Ensure the headset fits your head properly. You may be bumping the power button or trigering the presence sensor while adjusting the headset mid-game.

You might consider taping a small piece of paper over the presence sensor. (Note: Only the Quest 2 and 3 have a presence sensor, the 3S does not.)
Dirty external cameras can lead to poor tracking.
Clean them carefully with a microfiber cloth before each session.
You may be experiencing an OS-wide tracking issue.
If you have too many guardians mapped, the headset can sometimes start jumping back and forth between two in-game positions.

Clear your guardian history in settings and restart the headset to fix this.
Have you moved the calibration points?
Any slight difference from their original position could mess things up. You may need to delete and re-create the playspace.
The Quest 2 Can't Always Disable Recentering.
Even though we have re-centering disabled in shared-space mode, sometimes the Quest 2 still allows players to recenter. We found these webcam covers fit nicely over the Quest button (hold to recenter) and did the trick.
I can't make the boundary big enough to play the game.
I keep getting a message saying I've moved too far
You are likely playing in the Boundaryless edition of the game. Unfortunately Meta can't simply let it be boundaryless. This is a system-level warning and we can't turn it off for you.

In our testing, these pop-ups do not appear to mess with alignment, so you can ignore these, only play in spaces smaller than 24m x 14m, or disable Physical Space Features (see above), which you will again need to remember to enable for other games.

Accessibility

Motion Sickness
Playing the game as intended (Full-Scale Mode in a gym) does not induce motion sickness in even the most motion-sick-prone individuals as all of your in-game movements correlate precisely to your real-world movements.

If you are prone to motion sickness, move slowly on the stairs, make sure turrets are set to stationary, and be careful around open ledges, where you can fall to your death (in-game of course). You may also have discomfort comparable to all other VR games if playing at home in Stationary Mode.
Single Hand Operation
Everything in the game can be operated with one hand (either one).
Height & Mobility
  • Buttons in-game are all either 1 meter high or adjust to the height of the player. Most can be shot to activate.
  • One game action requires reaching behind your head.
  • Depending on the height of the player, weapons dropped by defeated players can sometimes drop high enough that it's hard to reach them.
Color Blindness
We have not yet eliminated all dependence on color, but tried to focus on heavy contrast, avoiding common color-blindness patterns.
  • Interactable elements are white, while the rest of the game is single colors and dark greys.
  • Team colors are Red and Blue.

Playing in a Large Space

To keep you safe while playing VR games in a small space, the Meta Quest has a feature called the Guardian Boundary, which provides an in-game grid wall to tell you when you're leaving your designated playspace. You may use Catastriphic Inversion with the Guardian enabled as a traditional standing/roomscale game... but we built it to be a game you could take to a gym and really move around in. Our game has its own boundary system that allows you to define the edges of your safe playspace, and it will automatically align maps within that space. It will only allow you to play maps that are the same size as (or smaller than) your space.
We have a few maps that fit within the max Guardian size of 10m x 10m, but the best maps require the Guardian to be disabled.

We built a version of the game that automatically disables the Guardian for our game only (leaving it enabled for other games) but as a smaller unproven developer, Meta does not allow us to publish this version to the main channel on the store yet. If you wish to play in a large space, you will need to do a little bit of work yourself. It is worth saying that this removes some of the safeguards Meta has in-place. It carries some risk, which you bear the responsibility for. Though we have done everything we can to make the game safe, without that os-level safeguard, headsets can (on rare occasions) come unaligned, and players have collided with other players and with walls. So far, no headsets have been damaged and no players have been severely injured.

If you choose to proceed, there's an easy way and a hard way.

The Easy Way Games on Meta Quest can have different release channels, allowing players to opt-in to testing different versions of the game. We've put our boundaryless version of the game on the RC Channel. You can switch to the RC channel from the game's settings in the App menu in the Meta Quest home. Please Note:
  • This version of the game will not allow you to play in standing/roomscale because the boundary is permanently disabled. You will need to switch back to the Live channel to play stationary.
  • When travelling ~25m with the boundary automatically disabled, there's an OS-level pop-up saying "you've travelled too far". You can ignore it and pop back into the game, but this takes you out of the experience and can get kind of annoying.
Our basketball-court-sized 14m x 24m maps are small enough to avoid this message, but if you want to play the biggest maps, you will need to opt for the hard way.

The Hard Way Putting your headset in Developer Mode allows a host of new features that you couldn't previously do. This includes sideloading apps from unofficial stores, modding existing apps, and manually disabling the Guardian Boundary. Anyone can put their headset in Developer Mode. You do not have to be a developer. (You do need to create a placeholder development studio in Meta Quest, but it's not a lengthy process.)
You can follow these instructions on the Meta Website.

Once your headset is in Developer Mode, you can disable the boundary by going to the Settings App > Advanced > Disable Physical Space Features.
Please note:
  • Once your boundary is disabled it will be disabled in ALL games. You will not get a warning that it isn't enabled when starting other games, which could result in a collision. You will need to remember to manually re-enable it when you stop playing Catastrophic Inversion. We provide a warning when you are switching to stationary mode, and when clicking the Quit button in-game, but if you simply close the game, you will receive no such warning.
